Güliz Pamukoglu combing pattern, Apprenticeship - Turkish ebrû marbled paper with calligraphy, 2002
Photography by Maggie Holtzberg

Ebrû is made by floating water-based pigments on the surface of a liquid medium and then creating swirling patterns with a stylus or comb, as Güliz Pamukoglu is doing in this photograph. Once the marbling is done, paper letters are cut and used as stencils with water-soluble glue. It is an iterative process of masking, exposing parts of the paper, then dipping and washing to remove the stencils from the paper. Feridun Özgören stresses the importance of working with high quality materials. "As artists, we are limited in resources, especially as beginners. Güliz is very, very careful and almost frugal, saying, 'I don't want to waste this beautiful paper.' I said, 'There is no waste in learning art.'"
