Walters Button Box, accordion, Musical instrument, c. 1957 Photography by Jason Dowdle
Joe Derrane's lifelong friend Jackie Martin gave him this button box, or accordion. It is similar to the one Joe played in his youth. As he describes, "We used to call them dancehall boxes. They were built for power. The PA systems in those days were a joke.' The box, however, was not built for speed. Joe says playing this box is "like digging potatoes . They were okay on the waltzes, hornpipes, and Highland two-steps, but they were sluggish on the jigs and reels."
