Door Knocker, Metalwork, 2004 Carl Close, Jr. (b. 1965) Collection of Hammersmith Studios Photography by Jason Dowdle
Although Carl Close, Jr., prefers modern gas-powered forges, most of his anvils and tools are over 100 years old, made in England. He also uses age-old techniques to make hardware like this English-style doorknocker with its Tudor roses. Carl uses a combination of methods to decorate his pieces, including repoussé, which involves hammering the metal from the back to raise a pattern, as well as chasing, which better defines the pattern on the surface.
