Cambodian classical (or court) dance dates back to the Angkor civilization of 1,000 years ago in which dancers performed blessing ceremonies in temples and for palace royalty to bring prosperity to the kingdom. These elegant, highly stylized dances were once performed exclusively for Cambodia's elite. Fans are used in a dance that glorifies the king. The fanning out gesture wards off evil spirits, while fanning in brings peace, prosperity, and good health.
