Before modern weather forecasting, weather vanes proved invaluable tools. During the 1800s, many manufacturers mass-produced vanes using cast-iron molds. Today, a handful of artisans - including Marian Ives - create one-of-a-kind, hand-wrought weather vanes. A large horse vane on her grandmother's barn inspired Marian's interest in the form. To make this cow, she hand-hammered the metal from the reverse -- a traditional technique -- taking special care to show the animal's musculature.
