                            | Members of the Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Association (GFWA) created this narrative quilt. In addition to honoring Gloucester's historic fishing heritage, the quilt tells the story of the association's struggles against factory trawlers, fish farming, oil drilling, and other environmental threats to the ocean. Nationally known quilt maker Clara Wainwright met with GFWA members every Wednesday night during the summer of 1998 to conceive and sew the quilt. It is a testament to the fishermen's wives respect for their husband's work in the fishing industry. The quilt is periodically put on display to make a political statement about ecological conservation. |
