Oud maker Peter Kyvelos' fascination with the music of his Greek heritage sparked his interest in instrument making. Kyvelos's shop, Unique Strings, is considered the epicenter of instrument-making by Greek, Armenian, and Middle Eastern musicians around the United States. Peter has built more than 175 ouds. Still, it's hard to make a living. Each delicate oud takes about 125 hours of work to complete. Peter says, "I've kept at this work out of idealism and stubbornness because I think it needs to be kept alive."
